Lady 'Canes Brave Cold, Earn Split with UNCP

AMERICUS, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes braved the elements Saturday afternoon and earned a split with UNC Pembroke on a cold day at Lady 'Cane Field.

Game 1: UNCP 7, GSW 4 (8 innings)

Two first-inning, RBI singles from Jordan Miller and Ashley Clifton got Georgia Southwestern on the board as the Lady 'Canes took a 2-1 lead going into the third inning.

In the third, UNCP regained the lead as the Lady Braves scored three runs to take a 4-2 advantage.

GSW tied it up the score in their half of the inning off an Avery Purser RBI double in the bottom half of the third.

The two teams remained knotted the rest of the way until UNCP (11-13, 1-0 PBC) scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning claiming a 7-4 victory.

GSW (15-10, 0-1 PBC) was paced by Rachel McElroy's three hit effort while Purser finished with a pair of RBIs for the Lady Hurricanes.

GSW starting pitcher Allison Pastor (6-4) was credited with the loss as the junior threw for 7.1 innings giving up seven runs off 13 hits, while striking out two.

Game 2: GSW 6, UNCP 5

After two scoreless innings, both teams punched in a run in the third inning off a pair of home runs.

UNCP's Taylor Cloninger went deep in the top half of the inning while GSW countered with a Rachel McElroy long ball in the bottom half.

UNCP's bats struck again in the top of the sixth inning as the Braves got a two-run home run from Brea Harley to pull ahead, 4-1.

Once again the Lady Hurricanes were quick to strike back as GSW punched in four runs in their half of the sixth inning off a sacrifice fly from Jordan Miller, a RBI single from Nellie Moore and a RBI double from Janna Anderson to pull ahead, 5-4.

UNC Pembroke (11-14, 1-1 PBC) had an answer as the Braves scored in the top of the seventh inning as Kaytee Wilson had a RBI single on the Braves' final out of the game to tie the score.

GSW prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning when Elliot Martin hit a walk off home run as the Lady 'Canes earned a split of the doubleheader.

GSW (16-10, 1-1 PBC) finished with seven hits on the contest from seven different Lady 'Cane players. Nellie more paced Southwestern with two RBIs.

Ashley Cavender (4-3) was awared the win for GSW as the sophomore tossed a complete game, allowing five runs off eight hits with three strikeouts.

Georgia Southwestern will be back in action this Wednesday, Feb. 6, as the Lady Hurricanes host Georgia College in doubleheader action beginning at 1 p.m.
