Home Runs Lead Anderson to Sweep of GSW

ANDERSON, S.C. - Georgia Southwestern started their six-game road trip through the state of South Carolina with a thud Thursday afternoon as the offensive prowess of Anderson University proved to be too much for the Lady Hurricanes to overcome as the Trojans swept the Blue and Gold in a pair of games at Smethers Field.

Game 1: Anderson 13, GSW 3 (5 innings)

Southwestern opened up the day with a quick start as the Lady 'Canes jumped out to the early lead in the first inning as seniors Avery Purser and Janna Anderson both drove in a run.

Purser scored Mason Moreland off a sacrifice fly while Anderson followed with an RBI-double to center field scoring Nellie Moore.

Anderson (24-5) countered with a big first inning of their own as a grand slam by AU's Charlotte Sieber helped the Trojans score seven runs off four hits to take a 7-2 advantage.

GSW's Jordan Miller had a third inning RBI-single to draw the Lady 'Canes closer but the Trojans proved to be too much offensively as AU scored six runs in the fourth inning to earn a 13-3 victory in five innings.

Anderson finished the game going 2-for-2 with one RBI as GSW (18-19, 2-8 PBC) finished with seven hits on the contest.

GSW's starting pitcher Allison Pastor (8-6) was credited with the loss as the junior allowed seven runs off five hits with five walks.

Game 2: Anderson 9, GSW 3

The second game of the contest mirrored the first game in several ways as GSW took the early 2-0 advantage after their half of the first inning when Purser scored a pair of runs off a single down the right field line.

Unfortunately for the Lady Hurricanes, the rest of the game mirrored the opening contest as Anderson (25-5) rallied back once again using the long ball in order to pull away from Southwestern.

AU's Molly Child hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning followed by a fifth inning solo blast from Lauren Bell as the Trojans scored nine runs off 13 hits to coast to the 9-3 victory.

Avery Purser had another solid outing going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. The senior finished the day with four hits and three RBIs for the Lady Hurricanes.

Starting pitcher Ashley Cavender (5-8) gave up seven runs off 12 hits with five strikeouts and was credited with the loss for GSW (18-20, 2-8 PBC).

Georgia Southwestern returns to action tomorrow afternoon as the South Carolina road trip continues with a stop at USC Aiken for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
