Weekend Recap: Moore Wants More

Fort Valley, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern softball team traveled to Fort Valley State  to play in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Between a no hitter by Ashley Cavender and Allison Pastor and the two Homeruns by Chelsea Littlejohn and Nellie Moore the Lady 'Canes were set to sweep Fort Valley.

GAME 1: GSW 9 FVSU 0 (5 inn.)

A top notch performance was seen by Cavender and Pastor who split credit for throwing a no hitter in the first game of the doubleheader. Cavender took the win after pitching in three innings and striking out three. Pastor finished the game by pitching the final two innings, striking out four of the six batters faced.

The game had an eventful start. Erin Steele was the first batter for GSW making it on base after a walk. Steele advanced on a wild pitch, then Rachel McElroy was walked. Jordan Miller then advanced by fielder's choice, getting McElroy out. Miller advanced on two separate wild pitches, the last one allowed Steele to come home. Nellie Moore was the next up and sent the ball into homerun territory. Moore and Miller scored. The first inning ended with three runs, one hit, and no errors, and no one left on base.

During the second inning, the Hurricanes Ashley Clifton was able to score off of a wild pitch. The Lady 'Canes next scoring opportunity was at the top of the fifth. Moore reached base on an error, then advanced on a pass ball. Clifton then came up and was able to reach on fielder's choice allowing Moore to make it home. Chelsea Hodges followed suit by doubling bringing in both Suzanna Stokes and Clifton. Chelsea Littlejohn then came up and hit her first homerun as a Lady 'Cane, also bringing in Hodges.

The Lady 'Canes ended the game up by nine runs.

Fort Valley's Alexis Ricks took the loss for the game after pitching in all five innings. Ricks faced 30 Hurricane batters and allowed four hits and nine runs, two of which were homeruns.

GAME 2: GSW 10 FVSU 2 (5 inn.)

The Lady 'Canes were up to it again in the second game. In the first inning, Allison Pastor singled and was able to reach second on an error, in the process of that happening McElroy and Steele scored. Keri Tompkins stepped up next singling, where Pastor found the opportunity to make it home. The next scoring opportunity came when Clifton singled and Tompkins made it home. Hodges was the next up who made it on base by fielders choice and Miller was able to make it home. This inning finished with five runs, four hits, two errors, and one left on base.

Moore added to her stats sheet in the second inning when she hit another homerun for the day also bringing in Littlejohn. Moore now has three homeruns on the record for this season, leading the Lady 'Canes.

Fort Valley was finally able to find there way all the way around the bases in the third inning when Asia Buckner hit a homerun also bringing in Bia Stearns. This was the only scoring opportunity for Fort Valley.

The Lady 'Canes were at it again in the fifth inning. McCall Faulkner made it home on a passed ball. Next Littlejohn singled, then reached second on an error and Steele was able to find her way home. Littlejohn was the last Hurricane to cross home plate on a pass ball. The game finished with GSW leading by eight.

Lauren Thrasher started the game and pitched the first two innings, giving her the win for the game after only allowing two hits and striking out one. Cavender made an appearance for two innings and Pastor finished off the last inning for the Lady 'Canes.

For Valley's Ricks took the loss after having pitched the full five innings in the second game as well. Ricks allowed 13 hits, ten runs, four walks, and one homerun.

The Lady 'Canes continue on the road to West Georgia on February 25th. The doubleheader on Tuesday is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
