Lady 'Canes Split with Pacers

AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern softball team competed in a doubleheader against fellow Peach Belt Conference team USC Aiken on Monday afternoon at Lady 'Cane Field. The two teams split the series with GSW taking the first win.

GAME 1: GSW 2 – USC Aiken 1

The Lady 'Canes took no time to get their first run on the board as Mason Moreland reached base after being walked. Then Moreland stole second. Next, Nellie Moore was able to reach first on fielder's choice while Mason snuck into third. Jordan Miller then hit a single bunt that allowed Mason Moreland to make it home, for the first run.

USC Aiken was unable to respond until the third inning where the first batter in the lineup, Kaitlyn White, was walked then stole second. Sarah Montei then hit a single down the left line to allow White to make it home safely.

The score was then tied until the bottom of the fifth inning. Moreland was able to reach this time with a single to the left side, and then was able to steal second. Miller was able to hit a single down the right line to allow Moreland to easily cross home plate.

Keri Tompkins hit a double during the game and Hayley Knight accomplished a sacrifice. Moreland, Steele, and Thrasher were able to come up with six stolen bases between them.

Allison Pastor (12-7) takes credit for the win after pitching a complete game. Pastor only gave up four hits and one run.

USC Aiken's India Kornegay (15-2) suffered her second loss of this season after pitching six innings and giving up five hits and two runs. Kornegay was able to strike out ten of the 29 GSW batters faced.

 

GAME 2: GSW 1 – USCA 2 (8 Innings)

USC Aiken didn't mess around when the first batter in the second inning, Andrea Daring came away with an early homerun.

The Lady 'Canes were finally able to respond during the fourth inning. Nellie Moore was walked, and then stole second. Then with two outs Rachel McElroy hit a double to left center to allow Moore to make it home to tie the score up.

The score stood at one-all until the top of the eighth inning when USC Aiken's Ashley Metts hit a double into center field to allow Victoria Burkett to score. The Lady 'Canes were unable to match the score in the following inning to end the game USC Aiken 2-1.

Sacrifices were achieved by Miller and Kiley Doster. Moore and Steele were able to get three more steals between them during the second game.

Ashley Cavender (10-10) takes credit for the loss as she pitched all eight innings and gave in ten hits and two runs; one of which was a homerun.

USC Aiken's Taylor Morgan (9-9) took credit for the win after also pitching all eight innings and only giving up four hits and one run. Morgan was able to strike out seven GSW batters.

 

The Lady 'Canes will be back at Lady 'Canes field on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. for a doubleheader against Valdosta State. The Lady 'Canes will be hosting their Faculty MVP Day at this time.
