Moore Ties School Record; Big Innings Lift Valdosta State Past Lady 'Canes

AMERICUS – The Lady 'Canes hosted Valdosta State University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. Valdosta State Blazers swept the Lady 'Canes with big third and fifth innings.

GAME 1: GSW 3 – VSU 7

A Career Night for Nellie Moore as she tied for the GSW NCAA-era Homerun Record as she achieved her 12th this season. This record is also held by Gabby Buck from 2009-12. This homerun was accomplished in the bottom of the first inning after Valdosta State made an unearned run.

With the score tied, the Blazers ran away with the score in the third inning with five runs. Shelby Altman hit a homerun to bring in two runs. Two runs during the inning were push walked in. One single by Kelly Gordon brought in another.

At the bottom of the third, GSW responded when Moore hit a double down the left line to allow both Mason Moreland and Lauren Thrasher to score. These were the last runs of the game by the Lady 'Canes.

Valdosta State had one more run in them as they made a hit to the left field, Kiley Rusen made it home.

Mason Moreland and Nellie Moore, both, went 2-for-4 at bats.

Allison Pastor (12-8) takes credit for the loss as six runs and three hits were made from the 17 batters faced. Ashley Cavender also made an appearance to finish the game. Cavender gave up one run and three hits.

Valdosta State's Brianna Hancock (14-4) takes credit for the win after pitching the whole game and only giving up three runs and six hits.

GAME 2: GSW 1 – VSU 11

It was a tough second game for the Lady 'Canes. Moreland was the only GSW runner to make it home during the game, as Rachel McElroy batted her in.  By this time in the game VSU had already scored one, a homerun by Courtney Albritton.

The runs were held at 0-0 for both sides until the fifth inning when the Blazers ran away with ten runs. Five of the runs were accomplished with three singles, and two doubles produced the other five.

With more than an eight run lead in the fifth inning, the game finished after the fifth inning.

McElroy went 2-for-2 at batting this evening and has one RBI. Moreland and Kiley Doster had one hit each after being at bat two times. Moreland achieved one sacrifice and one stolen base.

Ashley Cavender (10-11) takes the loss after facing 21 batters and pitching four innings. Cavender gave up eight hits and five runs. Allison Pastor also made an appearance on the mound finishing the game and giving up four hits and six runs.

Valdosta State's Maci Fletcher (10-0) took the win after pitching the whole game and only giving up one run and four hits.

The Lady 'Canes are on the road this coming weekend as they take on Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College. This doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
