Tompkins Grand Slam Not Enough For The Win

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-The Georgia Southwestern softball team played their first double header Saturday night in the Southeast/South Region Crossover at Flagler College. GSW (3-3) faced Florida Southern (9-2) and lost both games at Flagler Field.

GAME 1: GSW 1, Florida Southern 2

Florida Southern scored both their runs in the first inning after their first batter walked and advanced to second on a hit to left center and went to third on a passed ball. Their first and second batters scored off a hit deep to the right center. Their next two batters grounded out and the last one struck out swinging.

The Lady 'Canes got their only run at the bottom of the sixth when Kendyl Carver walked and scored after Rachel McElroy hit one to left field and made it to second.

GSW had 24 at bats 4 hits and 1 runs.

Haley Goodson (1-2) took the loss for the Lady 'Canes after pitching 7 innings and facing 31 batters. She gave up 5 hits, 2 runs, walked 4 and struck out 2.

GAME 2: GSW 5, Florida Southern 8

The second game had more action then the first starting with GSW getting four runs in the first. McElroy hit one to the left side and stayed on first. Goodson hit one to center field sending McElroy to second and Lauren Thrasher was walked. With bases loaded Keri Tompkins stepped up and delivered with a grand slam sending the ball deep down left field. GSW finished the first with 4 runs, 3 hits, 1 error by Florida Southern and 2 left on base.

Florida Southern tried to make a come back and had three runs in the second inning. After Ashlyn Worcester walked, Kim Booker singled one down right field advancing Worcester to second. Kylee Stearns also singled one out and advanced everyone by one base. With bases loaded Jordan Alexander made it to first on a error, sending Worcester home. Gianni Artidiello singled one down the right side sending Booked home and Jessica Lancis sent a sacrifice out out to center field sending Stearns in. The Moc's finished the second with 3 runs, 3 hits, 1 error by GSW and 2 left on base. 

GSW scored another in the third. Thrasher was walked again and advanced to second when Tompkins had a sacrifice hit. Allee Denney was up next and singled one to right center sending Thrasher home. GSW finished the third with 1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors and 2 left on base.

The Moc's had one run in the third, two in the fourth and two in the sixth to win 8-5.

GSW had 27 at bat, 6 hits and 5 runs.

Savannah Carlise (1-1) took the loss for GSW pitching 4.2 innings, faced 32 batters, gave up 12 hits, 6 runs, walked 5 and struck out 3.

Brittany Childs pitched 1.1 innings, faced 9 batters, gave up 2 hits, 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 0.

The Lady 'Canes play another double header Sunday against Berry University. Starting times are at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
