Cougars Home Runs Too Much For Lady Hurricanes

COLUMBUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's softball team was set back on Saturday when Columbus State recorded five home runs to come back late in both games at Cougar Field. 

GSW dropped to 12-14 overall and 0-4 in the Peach Belt Conference while Columbus State improved to 14-12-1 and 2-0 in the PBC.

GAME 1: GSW 2, COLUMBUS STATE 8

Columbus State scored the first run of the game late in the third inning. GSW took a one-run lead in the fifth after Hayley Tierce scored off a wild pitch and Allee Denney scored off a single from Sabrina Sieber.

The Cougars recorded four home runs in the last two innings of the game including a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth and a three-run homer in the six. Columbus State's defense held off GSW in the seventh to take their first conference win of the season.

Joshlyn Martin went 3-for-3 at the plate and Sieber went 2-for-2.

GSW finished with six hits and one error.

Shannon Gibson (L, 3-5) pitched 5 1/3 innings, faced 26 batters, struck out two, gave up eight hits, five runs and walked two.

 Brittany Childs pitched 2/3 of an inning, faced five batters, allowed two hits, three runs and walked one.

GAME 2: GSW 2, COLUMBUS STATE 5

The Lady 'Canes were off to a good start in the second game taking a one-run lead in the first when Mikela Barlow scored off a single from Denney and took a two-run lead in the third when Tierce scored.

Columbus State kept GSW to just two runs and scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth and hit a two-run homer in the sixth to come back late and complete the sweep.

Brittany Davis and Martin were 2-for-3 at the plate.

GSW finished with seven hits and no errors.

Brittany Childs (L, 6-4) pitched six innings, faced 28 batters, struck out three and scattered six  hits, five runs and walked two.

The Lady 'Canes are home on Wednesday to host Valdosta State in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
