Late Runs Earn Lady 'Canes A Split With Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C.- The Georgia Southwestern softball team scored five runs in the seventh inning of their second game against Francis Marion to come back and take the win earning them a split Saturday evening at Sparrow Stadium.

GSW is now 20-28 overall and 5-13 in the Peach Belt Conference and Francis Marion moved to 26-18, 8-12 PBC.

GAME 1: GSW 4, FRANCIS MARION 6

The Lady 'Canes captured the lead in the first inning scoring three runs. Hayley Tierce hit a single up the middle to score Brittany Davis, Allee Denney had a single to left center scoring Tierce and Joshlyn Martin scored off a ground out.

Francis Marion scored four runs in the bottom of the first off an RBI single and a three-run homer to take a one-run lead and hit a two-run home run in the fifth to take a three-run lead.

The Lady 'Canes were able to plate one more run in the seventh when B. Davis doubled to left center to score Shannon Gibson but Francis Marion's defense was able to keep GSW to just the one run and took a two-run win.

B. Davis went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Gibson pitched six innings, faced 27 batters, struck out one, walked two and scattered seven hits and six runs.

GAME 2: GSW 10, FRANCIS MARION 8

Francis Marion took a two-run lead in the first inning scoring off a single and a fielders choice. GSW took a one-run lead in the third when Graysen Sanders scored off a sacrifice fly and Martin hit a two-run double to score B. Davis and Mikela Barlow. B. Davis hit a two-run double to right center in the fourth inning scoring Sanders and Ella Hawkins to take a three-run lead.

Francis Marion tied the game in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single and a fielding error and took the lead in the fifth with a two-run homer. They scored one more run in the sixth off a double to take a three-run lead.

The Lady 'Canes rallied in the seventh to score five runs and take a two-run lead. Tierce singled up the middle to score B. Davis, Denney singled through the middle to score Barlow, Tierce scored off a walk, Martin scored off a fly out and Denney scored off a walk.

GSW was able to keep Francis Marion from coming back and scoring any runs to take the win.

B. Davis went 3-for-4 at the plate and had three RBIs and Sabrina Sieber was 2-for-3.

Brittany Childs pitched five innings, faced 26 batters, struck out three, walked one and gave up six hits and seven runs.

Kaley Sikes pitched two innings, faced nine batters, struck out one, walked one and only allowed two hits and one run.

The Lady 'Canes are home for the last time this season on Monday for a conference doubleheader against UNC Pembroke starting at 1 p.m.
