Martin Breaks GSW Hits Record In UNC Pembroke Sweep

AMERICUS, Ga.- Sophomore Joshlyn Martin broke the Georgia Southwestern softball NCAA era record for most hits in a season in their sweep over UNC Pembroke on Monday evening at Lady 'Canes Field.

Martin went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate to record her 62nd hit and recorded two RBI's in each game.

GSW is now 22-28 overall and 7-13 in the Peach Belt Conference and UNC Pembroke moved to 24-25, 5-17 PBC.

GAME 1: GSW 10, UNC PEMBROKE 2

Martin, Allee Denney and Sabrina Sieber hit consecutive RBI singles in the first inning to give the Lady 'Canes an early three-run lead. UNC Pembroke was able to score two runs in the second off a single up the middle to fall by one run.

Emily Smith scored off a wild pitch in the fourth and the Lady 'Canes scored six more in the sixth for an eight-run lead. Martin, Denney and Sieber hit consecutive RBI singles again, Ella Hawkins had an RBI double, Smith had an RBI single and Brittany Davis hit an RBI single to get GSW's 10th run and end the game.

Mikela Barlow went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs, Hawkins was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI and Martin, Denney and Sieber were all 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Gibson captured her seventh win, pitched six innings, faced 23 batters, struck out two, walked two and scattered five hits and two runs.

GAME 2: GSW 4, UNC PEMBROKE 1

Denney scored GSW's first run in the the second off a sacrifice fly and Smith scored off a single from Martin in the third to lead 2-0.

UNC Pembroke scored in the fourth off a single to left field and GSW scored two more in the fifth. Martin doubled to right center scoring Barlow and Denney singled to right field to score Martin.

GSW's defense was able to hold off UNC Pembroke and completed the sweep.

Barlow, Martin and Denney were all 2-for-3 at the plate. 

Brittany Childs picked up her ninth win, pitched seven innings, faced 28 batters, struck out one and gave up eight hits and one run.

The Lady 'Canes are away for on Friday for a conference doubleheader against North Georgia starting at 1 p.m.
