Softball Drops PBC Home Opener To Columbus State

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Columbus State in the Peach Belt Conference home opener at Lady Canes Field on Friday.

The Cougars jumped all over GSW in the first game, taking a 15-0 run-rule victory in five innings and followed with a come from behind 9-5 win in the night cap. The Lady Canes fall to 10-11 overall and 0-2 in PBC play while CSU improved to 14-7 and 2-0 in conference.

Game 1: Georgia Southwestern 0 Columbus State 15

Columbus State put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the first four innings, including four runs in the first and six in the second to take a 10-0 lead. The Cougars recorded 14 hits, seven of them going down for extra bases.

Freshman Lauren Kuerzi went 2-for-2 with two singles to lead the Lady Canes at the plate. Hayley Tierce and Brittany Childs each recorded a hit for GSW.

Game 2: Georgia Southwestern 5 Columbus State 9

The Cougars started hot at the plate once again, scoring three runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. GSW found an answer in the bottom half of the inning off CSU starter Helen Snavely.

Kuerzi led off the inning with a walk and the Lady Canes loaded the bases with one out after singles from Elizabeth Wills and Allee Denney. A strikeout brought Chloe Zoeller to the plate and she came through with a two-run single to make it a 3-2 game.

Mikela Barlow and Ansley Dean followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to give GSW their first lead of the day at 5-3. The lead held up until the fifth when CSU scored four runs to go ahead 7-5 and the Cougars added two more insurance runs in the seventh to make it 9-5.

Zoeller and Barlow both had two RBIs for GSW and five different players recorded a hit.

Up Next: GSW faces Valdosta State at Lady Canes Field on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
