GSW Sweeps FVSU For Home Opener

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team opened up the Lady Canes field with not only a shutout but they swept Fort Valley State Saturday afternoon by scores of 9-0 and 6-0. Mackenzy McFarland hit her first home run of the season this year during game one; that pushed a total of three scores across the plate in the five-inning game.

McFarland was at bat six times, had four runs with three hits and a bunt. She finished the day with the sole home run, four RBIs and one stolen base.

Game one: GSW 9, FVSU 0

Jennifer Jernigan took the mound and pitched a perfect five innings, getting seven strikeouts while only letting off one hit. Kayla Kerr got the scoring started for the Lady Canes when she popped one out to left field that pushed Tanner Robertson, who stole two bases in game one, across the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Aimee Oglesby received an RBI as a confused defense elected to pick off Hayley Tierce, who was attempting to advance to third, that led McFarland to score.

In the bottom of the third, GSW scored five runs. First, Chloe Zoeller singled up the middle that pushed Jenna Hollomon across the plate. An error by the Wildcats third base gave Robertson a RBI when Briana Bryson scored from second base. With Robertson and Zoeller on base, McFarland hit one over the left fence to push the score up 7-0 to end the third.

The last two scores came in the bottom of the fourth inning; Aimee Oglesby doubled for a RBI as Sara Beth King scored. Bryson singled one right up the middle to push Oglesby across the plate for the final 9-0 score, as the game ended in five innings.

Game two: GSW 6, FVSU 0

A Bryson double in the bottom of the second got things started for GSW as she pushed King across the plate for a RBI. In the bottom of the third, King reached first base on a fielders choice but she received an RBI when McFarland snuck in to score. Tierce also scored in the bottom of third when Kerr reached first base because of an error by the right fielder.

GSW scored their remaining runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. McFarland singled but advanced to second base and she pushed Bryson across the plate, who snuck in behind the catcher for a Lady Canes score. Tierce hit a sacrifice fly that advanced everyone and pushed Allyson Murdock across the plate. King received her second RBI when she made it to first off a fielders choice to push McFarland across the plate for the 6-0 final.

KayLynn Church received the win this afternoon as she pitched three innings, let off one hit and had two strikeouts.
