Kerr Leads Sweep Over Hawks

ROME, Ga. -- Kayla Kerr hit two home runs and had three runs batted in as Georgia Southwestern softball team swept Shorter University by scores of 4-0 and 5-1 Wednesday evening inside of Alto Park Softball Complex in Rome, Ga. 

GSW hit a total of four home runs throughout this evening's sweep of the Hawks. Kerr currently leads GSW with 23 RBIs this season. 

Game one: GSW 4, Shorter 0

Shannon Gibson pitched a full seven innings and gave up three hits while serving two strikeouts to the Hawks as she kept them blank throughout the first game as she holds a 0.56 earned run average with 25 innings pitched. Kerr's first home run came in the top of the second when she sent one over the center wall for an RBI. In the bottom of the third, Allyson Murdock hit her first homer to the same spot as that led to a 2-0 lead. 

With Hayley Griffin on base, Briana Bryson also hit her first home run of the season over the right field wall for two RBIs to add insurance during their first game. GSW had four runs and four hits to cap the win. 

Game two: GSW 5, Shorter 1

After being blank for three innings, Kerr's second home run came in the top of the fourth inning when she sent one over the right wall to push Hayley Tierce across the plate for a 2-0 lead. Tanner Robertson received an RBI when she pushed Murdock across the plate in the top of fifth inning for a 3-0 score. 

In the top of the seventh, Murdock scored on a wild pitch to up the score by one. With Sarah Beth King up next, she was hit by a pitch as she received an RBI when Tierce crossed the plate to give GSW a 5-0 lead. Shorter (13-12) got their lone score of the evening in the bottom of the seventh when Taylor Martin singled to the left to push Maddie Hunt across the plate. GSW (12-10) cycled through three pitchers but Jennifer Jernigan got her fourth win of the season as she gave up three hits but led with three strikeouts. 

Up Next: GSW travels to Greenwood, S.C., where they will play Lander University in a Peach Belt double-header on March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
