Lady Canes Split Doubleheader With Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C., -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure a 6-2 win in game one of a doubleheader against Peach Belt foe Lander University Friday evening at Doug Spears Field. 

The Lady Canes split the evening, taking game one but losing game two, 4-0. 

Game one: GSW 6, Lander 2

Both teams went scoreless until the top of the fifth. Elizabeth Wills got an RBI when she grounded out and pushed Haley Griffin across the plate for the 1-0 score. Chloe Zoeller led GSW to a 2-0 lead before the third out as she pushed Aimee Oglesby across the plate when she reached first base on a fielder's choice. Lander pushed back, scoring in the both the bottom of fitth and sixth innings to tie the game at 2-2. 

With bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Kayla Kerr was hit by a pitch and advanced all runners as Briana Bryson added one to the score for GSW. Next at bat was Lauren Kuerzi, who was walked as that pushed Tanner Robertson to give the Lady Canes a 4-2 lead. Sarah Beth King ended the inning when she singled to the left field for two RBIs, pushing Hayley Tierce and Kerr across the plate for the 6-2 final score. Shannon Gibson picked up her third win of the season, pitching a full seven innings, letting off seven runs while throwing six strikeouts. 

Game two: GSW 0, Lander 4

The Bearcats got revenge in game two as they held GSW scoreless but gave up two hits to Robertson and Kuerzi. After four innings, Bearcats Kasey Rogers picked up a pair of RBIs when she pushed two teammates across home plate for a 2-0 lead. Lander added insurance in the bottom of the sixth, when they added two more scores for the split win. Bearcats Abby Killian picked up her eighth win of the season, striking out 11 Lady Canes. 

Jennifer Jernigan picked up the loss for GSW as she pitched five innings and gave up seven hits but led with three strikeouts. Robertson, Tierce and Oglesby were all left on base for GSW to end the day. 

Up Next: The Lady Canes return home to host Augusta University on Sunday, March 18. First pitch of the doubleheader is at noon.
