No Luck Needed As Canes Complete Sweep

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team completed their first Peach Belt sweep this season with wins against Augusta University Sunday afternoon at Lady Canes Field. The Lady Canes swept the Jaguars by scores of 7-5 and 10-2, as game two ended in five innings.

GSW put up a total of 19 hits throughout 12 innings. Sarah Beth King led GSW with seven RBIs in game two. 

Game one: GSW 7, Augusta 5

With Tanner Robertson on base, Hayley Tierce sent one over the scoreboard into the trees for her first home run to pick up two RBI's as GSW led to end the first, 2-0. In the top of the second, Augusta pushed a pair of doubles and a single to take a 4-2 lead as Augusta's Bella Fernandez picked up two RBIs herself. GSW followed up with scores in every inning as a single by Aimee Oglesby started things off when she pushed Lauren Kuerzi across the plate for a 4-3 score. In the bottom of the third, Mackenzy McFarland advanced runners with a Jaguars error that led to Murdock running in to tie the game at 4-4. 

With bases loaded, Kuerzi pushed one right out of reach of the center field's hand and picked up two RBIs when Kayla Kerr and Tierce scored. Kerr picked up an RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning when her single led Oglesby across the plate. Jennifer Jernigan, who took the win at the mound, gave up one home run in the bottom of the sixth to Kelsea Hunter as the Jaguars tried to make a comeback. Ansley Dean was credited with the save as she replaced Jernigan, who gave up five hits but had five strikeouts throughout five innings pitched. 

Game two: GSW 10, Augusta 2

After a rough start in game one, Shannon Gibson returned to the mound and stayed undefeated as she let off four hits and had one strike out for her fourth win of the season. Down 1-0, Tierce sent one over the left field wall for second home run this afternoon. A few pitches later, Sarah Beth King homered over the center field wall and pushed Kerr across the plate as GSW started to take control of the game, going into the second inning up 3-1. Robertson picked up and RBI when she singled up the middle, advancing Brianna Bryson across the plate in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded, Kerr singled down the left field line as Chloe Zoeller ran in. King picked up three RBI's when she singled up the middle to put the score at 8-1. 

Jaguar's Megan McCook sacrificed herself as she picked up an RBI in the top of the fourth. King followed suit with two more RBIs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach, giving them the sweep this afternoon. 

Up Next: GSW continues their home stint when they invite Auburn-Montgomery to town on Wednesday, March 20. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
