Softball Splits; Wins Season Opener

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team picked up their first win of the season as they defeated Barry (Fla.) in game 1 of the Flagler Invitation Friday evening. The Lady Hurricanes won in six innings, by score of 12-4, due to the NCAA DII run rule. Barry ran away with game two, ending it in five innings as they won, 10-2. 

Aimee Oglesbe picked up the first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth as she also picked up two RBIs to help extend the lead. Newcomer Katelyn Wood also hit her first career home run in Game 2 but the Lady Hurricanes fell in Game 2. 

Game 1: GSW 12, Barry 4

Throughout the first 3 1/2 innings, the score was blank until GSW got on the board first. In the bottom of the third, newcomer Kimmy Singer picked up two RBIs when she doubled down the left field line to send Chloe Zoeller and Allyson Murdock across the plate for their first scores of the 2020 season. 

In the bottom of the fourth with one on base, Aimme Oglesby hit GSW's first home run of the year as she picked up two RBIs to make the score 4-0. After a walk and steal, Murdock picked up a run when Singer singled into left field. Newcomer Katelyn Wood picked up her first RBI with a single right up the middle as Zoeller crossed the plate to make the score 6-0. With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Zoeller singled into left field and picked up an RBI when Grayson James scored. 

Barry picked up four runs in the top of the sixth due to one error, one steal and a pair of RBIs but the Buccaneers but GSW (1-0) responded with a huge bottom sixth to take the win. With bases loaded, Mackenzy McFarland picked up two RBIs when she singled into right field. Murdock followed suit with a double as she also picked up two RBIs. Wood was the icing on the cake as she picked up an RBI when she was hit by a pitch to push the score to 12-4. 

Shannon Gibson stood inside the circle and gave up six hits throughout six innings pitched while striking out seven Buccaneers as she picked up her first win of the season. 

Game 2: GSW 2, Barry 10

With two outs, Wood stepped up to bat with a full count as she hit her first home run of her Lady Hurricane career into the left field to put GSW up 1-0. However, Barry responded with three runs in the bottom first as a homer by Payton Germer gave them the 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Buccaneers added three more scores to the board with one error, a single and fielders choice as they went up, 7-1. 

Zoeller stepped up in the top of the fifth with bases loaded as she sent one into left field and picked up an RBI as McFarland ran across the plate to get GSW on the board for the final time. Unfortunately, Barry (1-1) answered back in the next inning with three runs as they took the split during opening day of the Flagler Invitation. Gabi LoPresti started inside the circle and picked up the lost as GSW cycled through three different pitchers.

Up Next: The Lady Hurricanes will play Lynn University during Day 2 of the Flagler Invitational with games starting at 4 and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1.
