Softball Blanks FVSU in Doubleheader

FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team completed the two-game sweep against Fort Valley State as they defeated them 11-0 and 13-0 during Saturday's afternoon doubleheader at Wildcat Field.

Katelyn Wood led the Lady Hurricanes as she finished the day going 4-for-8 with five RBIS, a pair of doubles and a home run. Mackenzy McFarland pushed one deep into the left field which was ruled an inside-the-park home run during Game 1. 

Game 1: GSW 11, FVSU 0

A RBI bunt single by Allyson Murdock in the top of the second got things started for GSW. With one out, Chloe Zoeller singled in the left center to plate Oglesby followed by Jacie Johns, who grounded out but picked up an RBI when Murdock scored. With two on base, Wood sent a bomb over the center field wall to push the score 5-0. 

McFarland started the top of the third with an inside-the-park home run that was sent into left field. After an error, Murdock was able to score again to push the score 7-0. In the top of the fifth, Zoeller and Johns both doubled down the left line as Zoeller picked up one RBI while Johns picked up two. A single by Wood plated Johns as GSW led 11-0. Shannon Gibson picked up her sixth win this season throughout five innings of work while giving up one hit and striking out four Wildcats. Both Woods and Johns finished with three RBIs. 

Game 2: GSW 13, FVSU 0

After singles in opposite corners by Zoeller and Johns, Wood doubled into the right center and picked up two RBIs in the top of the first. Aimee Oglesby followed suit with a double of her own to plate Wood followed by Lauren Kuerzi, who hit a RBI single as GSW led 4-0. A single by McFarland in the third upped the score by one for the Lady Hurricanes. 

In the top of the fourth, A SAC RBI bunt by Kuerzi plated McFarland followed by a two RBI double by Murdock. One of FVSU (3-7) errors plated Murdock as a RBI single by Johns closed the fourth inning for GSW (13-5), 11-0. Jennifer Jernigan controlled the circle in Game 2 as she had 11 strikeouts while only giving up one hit for her fifth win this season. Kuerzi was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run as three other Lady Hurricanes finished with multi-hit games. 

Up Next: The Lady Hurricanes will play Valdosta State in a midweek matchup on Wednesday, March 4 as the first doubleheader will start at 3 p.m.
