GSW upsets D-I Jacksonville State in exhibition

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team used a 10-0 run over the final 3:14 to upset NCAA Division I Jacksonville State, 62-55, at Pete Matthews Coliseum on Sunday afternoon in exhibition action.

After going back-and-forth over the opening three minutes, GSW grabbed an 8-6 lead on a Kanita Holloway jumper with 16:59 remaining in the half.

Southwestern led by as many as nine points on two occasions, before taking a 27-21 advantage into the halftime break.

In the second stanza, JSU regained the lead four minutes in (31-30) and built its largest lead of the contest at 49-44 with 6:28 remaining, but GSW fought back to even it at 52-52 at the 3:45 mark.

Jacksonville State, member of the Ohio Valley Conference, opened a slim margin of 55-52 with 3:14 left in the contest, but the Lady Hurricanes held the Gamecocks scoreless the rest of the way and claimed the seven-point win.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half. GSW hit 10-of-34 shots (29.4 percent) while Jax State went 8-for-25.

In the second period, the Lady Hurricanes connected on 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) and JSU hit 12-of-29.

Southwestern won the battle on the boards, finishing with a 45-37 rebounding advantage.

GSW had a trio post double figures. Marshall University transfer Tania Walters led the way for Southwestern in scoring with 14 points while adding six rebounds. Holloway finished with 12 points and seven boards. Jessica Bivins chipped in 12 points.

Preseason OVC selection Brittany Wiley led all scorers with a 21-point performance to go with ten rebounds.

Southwestern opens the regular season on Nov. 16 at Albany State.
