Lander Outlasts GSW on Stormey Evening, 70-63.

AMERICUS - On a rainy evening in the Storm Dome, the Lander Lady Bearcats outlasted the Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes, 70-63, to extend GSW's losing streak to eight games.

The Lady 'Canes raced out to a 12-8 lead seven minutes into the first half when the game was delayed for several minutes due to a loss of power caused by inclement outside weather conditions.

When play resumed, the Blue & Gold were appropriately led by junior point guard Stormey Smith's eight first half points on their way to a 31-27 lead heading into the intermission.

In the second period, Lander stormed back, led by forward Precious Elkins. The senior scored 10 out of the Lady Bearcat's first 12 points as Lander took a 39-38 advantage midway through the second half.

GSW senior Briana Walker led the Lady 'Cane second half charge as the forward notched 10 of her team-high 14 points (7-of-8 shooting) in the second period.

Elkins proved to be too much however as she carried the Lady Bearcats throughout the half pouring in 18 of her game-high 24 points as Lander held off GSW for the victory.

Lander improves to 7-10, 4-6 in the Peach Belt Conference while GSW falls to 3-16, 1-11 PBC.

Smith finished with 10 points and six rebounds on the evening while freshman forward Jasmine McSwain chipped in 10 points and six rebounds as well for the Lady Hurricanes.

Georgia Southwestern returns to the court Saturday as the Lady 'Canes hit the road once again to take on Young Harris for a 1:30 p.m. tip.
