Lockett's Double-Double Carries GSW Past Paine

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Georgia Southwestern guard Shanedra Lockett posted a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Hurricanes past Paine College, 74-70, on Tuesday evening.

GSW improves to 3-1 and matches its win total from a year ago. The Lady Hurricanes finished 3-23 last season. Paine falls to 1-3.

For Lockett, it was her second 20-point night in as many games. The junior from Roberta, Ga. was 6 of 8 from the field, 8 of 13 from the free throw line and she had five assists. Danisha Green added 16 points and broke the program's NCAA era record for most steals in a game with eight. Tiara Thompson scored 14 points and Jasmine McSwain added 11.

Ashley Watts led the Lady Lions with a game-high 29 points. Watts connected on 6 of 11 from beyond the arc and she picked up six assists. Ariel Brown scored 19 points and Lashonda Canty chipped in 10.

Paine held its largest lead of the night at 19-10 with 9:49 left in the first half before the Lady Hurricanes went on a 15-6 run to tie the ballgame at 25-25 with 4:14 until the break. After both sides went scoreless for almost two minutes, Danisha Green broke the deadlock with a pair of free throws to give GSW the lead. The Lady Hurricanes were unable to hold the advantage and Paine led 34-32 at the half.

The two sides tussled the entire second half as the lead changed hands 13 times. GSW grabbed control for good when Lockett sank a pair of free throws with 2:39 remaining to go up 67-65.

With the Lady Hurricanes up 73-70 in the closing seconds, Green picked up her final steal of the night to keep Paine from getting a look at a game-tying basket and sealed the win for GSW.

Southwestern shot 50.9 percent for the game compared to 45.0 percent for Paine. The Lady Hurricanes outrebounded the Lady Lions, 35-32, and had 11 more steals (20-9). A solid night from long range kept Paine in the contest. The Lady Lions were 6 of 12 from 3-point range while GSW finished 1 of 8.

The Lady Hurricanes face another pair of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools this weekend when they host Albany State at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Fort Valley State at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the third annual PBC/SIAC Challenge.
