Lockett Leads The Lady 'Canes

Spartanburg, S.C. – Georgia Southwestern had three players score double-digits in a 84-63 nonconference women's basketball victory Monday afternoon at Converse College.

The Lady 'Canes had a slow start to the game. After being stuck at 11 points, from 15:10 to 11:04, the Valkyries were able to reach their largest lead of the game of five points. Danyelle Jones made a jump shot at 11:04, kicking GSW into gear. The Lady 'Canes led at the half 37-28.

Shanedra Lockett in the first half had nine points, five rebounds and three assists. Danisha Green also contributed seven points, four rebounds, and an assist. The Lady 'Canes were 14-for-32 in field goals for the first half.

Over the course of the second half, GSW steadily increased their lead on Converse. Lockett's made layup at 2:26, which clinched the largest lead for GSW during the game. GSW was up by 24 points. The final score between the teams was 84-63.

Lockett shined in the second half getting 12 more points, totaling 21 points. Shatoria Hudson added 17 points, five rebounds, one assist, and four steals over the course of the game. Green finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and steals. Tiara Thompson had a career high night with nine rebounds. Thompson also contributed seven points, 2 assists and steals.

Margo Dill led the Valkyries with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Samira Gillcrese accomplished the most points for the Valkyries with 13 points.

GSW improves to 5-4, 0-2 this season. The Valkyries fall to 0-8. It was the first meeting between the schools.

The Lady Hurricanes are off until January 4, 2014, when they travel to play Peach Belt Conference opponent Young Harris College at 1:30 p.m.
