Mountain Lions Pounce On Canes Early

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team played on the road against Peach Belt Conference opponent Young Harris College on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Hurricanes were playing catch up all game. GSW fell behind early and by 16:23 the Mountain Lions were leading 10-2. The first half ended with the Lady Hurricanes trailing 17-41.

Tiara Thompson was the high scorer for the Lady Hurricanes in the first half with seven points.

The Lady Hurricanes came back in the second half ready to do work. Shanedra Lockett contributed six points in a 14 point run only interrupted by one Mountain Lion basket. Danisha Green, Thompson, Shaniece Sheffield, and Jasmine McSwain contributed to the run as well. McSwain and Thompson gave the Lady Hurricanes a final six points at the end of the game in attempt to shorten the lead. GSW outscored YHC 38 to 30 over the second half. This was not quite enough to secure a lead, the game finished 71-55.

Thompson finished with a game high of 14 points and grabbed three rebounds with one block shot. McSwain achieved all 12 of her points in the second half. McSwain also contributed three rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block over the course of the game. Lockett and Sheffield contributed eight points each. Lockett grabbed six rounds, had two assists and 3 steals. Sheffield added four rebounds, one assist and a steal.

Young Harris College's Ladondra Johnson was the only person in the game to achieve a double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Hurricanes are currently 5-5, 0-3 in the PBC. The Mountain Lions have progressed to 7-3, 2-1 PBC.

GSW plays again on Friday, January 10th at 5:30 in another Peach Belt Conference match up against UNC Pembroke.
