Cougars Always On The Prowl

Columbus, Ga. –Junior Shanedra Lockett led the Lady Hurricanes on the road Thursday afternoon against fellow Peach Belt opponent Columbus State with a double-double, producing a game high of 20 points and 10 rebounds. However, Columbus State had multiple players scoring in the double figures producing a victory of 67-56.

Columbus State improves to a record of 14-4, 9-3 PBC. GSW moves on to an 8-12, 3-10 PBC record.

Both teams committed eight turnovers before the first media timeout was called at 15:49. During which, five of GSW's possessions ended due to turnovers. The Lady 'Canes finally were able to break this trend when junior Tiara Thompson scored the first basket for GSW at 16:20, GSW trailed by five. Thompson and Sierra Barrino-Kennedy kept things moving adding another basket each. Lockett added two free throws bringing the score to only a four-point difference. Later in the sixth minute, Lockett assisted successful layups by Jodelle Dixion and Jasmine McSwain bringing the game to a one-point difference, CSU leading 21-20. The Lady Cougars then found their way to the basket, getting the lead up around a nine-point difference. The Lady Hurricanes went in at half trailing by nine, 32-41.

"It was a sloppy half for both teams offensively, during the first half," reports Columbus State broadcaster. GSW shot 38.9% (14-of-36) from the field and zero-of-4 from beyond the arc. CSU didn't do much better with 36.6% (15-of-41) from the field and made three from beyond the arc. At the end of the half GSW had 10 turnovers compared to CSU's 6.

Coming out of half time Lockett and Shatoria Hudson were the first to capitalize off their layups. From 17:50-13:24 GSW was unable to get a shot to go in the hoop, until McSwain was able to get a lay up in. McSwain followed that up with two free throws, GSW 40-48. GSW went 100% from the free throw line with successful trips by Lockett, Danisha Green, and McSwain.

GSW went on a 13-2 run over the Lady Cougars. Starting at 10:32 with a layup from Lockett. That was followed by various layups and jump shots from Locket, McSwain, and Green to close the gap to one point at 5:49, 53-54. The next run of 7-0 by CSU rocked GSW back a bit. At 3:16, Hudson made the first and only three point shot for GSW during the whole game. This was also the last made shot by GSW. The Lady 'Canes attempted a come back making fouls in the final minutes, but were unsuccessful to no avail. The final score read Columbus State 67-56.

McSwain joined Lockett with double figures, scoring 12 points and snatching two rebounds. Barrino-Kennedy collected nine rebounds and added six points of her own. Thompson was the only player to foul out during the game. Thompson contributed four points and seven rebounds. Green handled the ball well for GSW adding three points, on steal, four assists, and two rebounds.

Columbus State's Carrie Washington had 13 points, but led the game with 18 rebounds. Chatll Bradford had 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Asha Alexander added 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady 'Canes are on the road for another game to Georgia College on February 8th. Tip off is set for 1:30 p.m. The Hurricanes will be back at home on February 12th.
