Southwestern Tops Augusta

Augusta, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern traveled to Augusta to take on fellow Peach Belt opponent Georgia Regents University on Saturday afternoon. Junior Shanedra Locket led the game with 24 points, assisting the Hurricanes in a 77-69 victory over the Jaguars.

The Lady 'Canes were off to an early head start. Starting with Kiana Griffin at 14:20, GSW received seven fast points finished with Tiara Thompson getting fouled on a made basket. GSW was at a ten point lead at 3:16, 17-7, which is the largest lead the Lady 'Canes had for the day. GSW held the lead until the Jaguars came back with under three minutes to go in the half. Augusta went on a 12-3 run to finish the half. GSW trailed by five going into the half, 33-38.

The Lady 'Canes led in turnovers during the first half with 15, compared to the Jaguars ten. Thompson had the most points for GSW with 10 points at half. The Lady 'Canes shot well in the first half with (13-for-27) 48.1% of field goals attempted.

Coming out of the half, Augusta's Kelsey Fynaardt made a layup, putting the Jaguars seven points ahead. This was the largest lead they held during the game. At the 12:32 mark, GSW went on a 16-6 run putting GSW back in the lead, 49-46. During this run, three pointers were taken by Thompson and Danyelle Jones to begin and end the run.

Augusta was only able to tie the game on more time at 53-53. The Lady 'Canes took this as a wakeup call and went on another 12-6 run on the Jaguars. Augusta attempted the fouling game near the end to get back in the game, but was unsuccessful in the attempt. The Lady 'Cane prevailed a 77-69 victory.

GSW didn't take much assistance from the bench with scoring as only seven points were contributed. Over the course of the game GRU Augusta committed two more turnovers.

Lockett added six rebounds to her high scoring, with three assists and two steals. McSwain snatched 6 rebounds, one steal, two blocks and one assist to accompany her double digit scoring. Thompson had four rebounds, three assists, and one steal to complement her double digit scoring.

GRU Augusta saw a double-double by Becky Newhouse with 20 points (7-for-13) and 11 points. Double-digit scores were also seen by Tavia Sykes, Whitney Rohrbach, and Dericka Griffis.

The Lady 'Canes improve to a 9-14, 5-12 PBC record. Georgia Regents University continues onto a 9-12, 5-9 PBC.

The Lady 'Canes stay on the road to play USC Aiken on February 19th, tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
