Lady 'Canes Fall In Finale To No. 22 North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team traveled to play Peach Belt Conference opponent North Georgia on Saturday afternoon. Lockett's 17 point team high was unable to wavier the 22nd ranked North Georgia team during the 85-68 loss.

These two teams met earlier in season on January 23rd in Americus at the Storm Dome. North Georgia won by six points.

North Georgia was off with an early five point lead in the first half. Lockett was able to complete the next made eight points for GSW, the last three came from a fouled jump shot and free throw at 14:46. Shatoria Hudson kept the game within four points after a layup and two made free throws at 12:45. The Lady 'Canes didn't have another basket until Jasmine McSwain finished a play with a nice layup. At the 7:55 mark, GSW was down by 11. The Lady 'Canes went on a 12-0 run between the 5:19 marker and 3:23 mark, starting and ending with free throws by Shaniece Sheffield, bringing the score back to a four point difference. Other shots in this time were made by McSwain (5), Tanyetta Hill, and Kiana Griffin.  The half ended with a layup by Tiara Thompson and a score of GSW 28 – NG 36.

At this point in the game Lockett had secured eight of her total points. And six different Lady 'Canes made steals compared to North Georgia's three.

The Lady 'Canes came back into the second half fired up and ready to score. Beginning with a layup by Thompson, the Lady 'Canes succeeded in a much needed 14-6 run over the Nighthawks. The last basket in this series was by a layup from McSwain. This basket brought the score to 42-all. The Nighthawks quickly went away with the game on a 38-18 point run away. The three-point basket at 2:51 by Nighthawks Jordan Livesay reached NG largest lead of the game with 22 points. GSW finished the game strong, scoring 6-1 with free throws by Thompson and Griffin and a basket by Locket. North Georgia came out victorious in a 85-68 point win.

A few noteworthy stats, GSW's bench scored 22 points compared to North Georgia's 14. The Lady 'Canes committed only four more turnovers than the Nighthawks. GSW was only shy four rebounds from equaling boards with NG.

The 22nd ranked Nighthawks advance to a 21-5 overall record and 15-4 in PBC. GSW finishes the season with a 9-17 overall record and 4-15 PBC record.

Shanedra Lockett led GSW with 17 points and nine rebounds. Jasmine McSwain joined in double-digit scoring of 14 points and four rebounds. Shatoria Hudson added ten points and one rebound, while Tiara Thompson added eight points and six rebounds. Danyelle Jones finished the game with notably three assists, six points and four rebounds.

GSW was unable to keep up with North Georgia standout Mimi Hill, who scored 37 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The next highest scorer for the Nighthawks was Stephanie Huffman with 15 points and seven rebounds.
