Lady Hurricanes Remain Undefeated In Peach Belt Conference

AUGUSTA, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team remains undefeated in the Peach Belt Conference after Thursday nights win over Augusta University in the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

For the first time in GSW women's basketball history the Lady 'Canes are 3-0 in the PBC. GSW improved to 8-2 overall, while Augusta University moved to 5-5, 0-4 in the PBC.

The Lady 'Canes were up by six points halfway through the first quarter. Mallory Diamond took a two point lead with a 3-pointer followed by Whitney Young and Va'Queshia Hall with baskets to extend their lead to 9-3.

Augusta came back to take a two point lead and the Lady 'Canes tied it up three times before the Jaguars led 19-17 heading into the second quarter.

The Jaguars kept their lead throughout the second quarter and outshot GSW 18-10 to head into halftime up 37-27.

GSW trailed Augusta most of the third quarter but kept hacking away at their lead. With 2:53 remaining Diamond put in another 3-pointer to come within two points and at the 1:11 mark Gabby Figgers tied the game 50-50. GSW headed into the final quarter down by one point.

Hall put in back-to-back baskets to start the fourth quarter and take the lead. GSW extended their lead to nine points after Shanya Jones put in a layup followed by Kris Beckham with a 3-pointer and Diamond topped off GSW's run with a layup with 6:27 remaining.

Augusta cut the lead to seven before Jones made a free throw, jump shot and another free throw to give GSW an 11 point lead with 54 seconds left. Augusta made a basket with 42 seconds left to give GSW a 75-66 victory.

The Lady 'Canes shot their best in the second half recording 83.3% and 24 points in both the third and fourth quarters. They out shot Augusta an average of 14.5 points during each quarter.

Hall led GSW with 16 points and Whitton led with 8 rebounds. Diamond shot 100%, shooting 5-5 to record 13 points. 

The Lady Hurricanes are back on the road Friday to play Lander University at 5 p.m.
