Lakers Overpower Lady Hurricanes

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team suffered an 80-53 loss to Clayton State Wednesday night in the Storm Dome.

GSW is now 11-6 and 6-4 in the Peach Belt Conference while Clayton State moved to 15-4, 7-3 PBC.

Aleah Holden scored the first two baskets of the game to take a 4-0 lead. The Lakers put in a layup and a 3-pointer to take a one point lead. Holden made two free throws to take the lead back and Clayton State made a layup to take a one point lead again. Shanya Jones reciprocated with a layup and took another one point lead.

The Lakers went on a 10 point run to lead 17-8 with 1:08 left in the first quarter before Kris Beckham was able to put in jump shot.

Clayton State ended the first quarter with two layup's to lead 21-10 heading into the second quarter and out scored GSW 18-9 in the second to head into halftime up 39-19.

The Lakers took a 27 point lead with 5:38 remaining in the third and the Lady 'Canes went on an eight point run to cut the margin to 19. Va'Queshia Hall put in a jump shot, Jones made a layup, Brittany Grant made two free throws and Hall finished it with two free throws.

Despite having their highest scoring quarter of 20 points the Lady 'Canes headed into the final quarter down 62-39.

The Lakers took a 30 point lead with 2:14 left in the game and Gabby Figgers cut it to 27 with a 3-pointer to close out the game.

Holden recorded her fourth double double of the season scoring 13 points and picking up 11 rebounds. Chanice Whitton scored 10 points and had eight rebounds.

The Lady Hurricanes are on the road Saturday to play Georgia College at 1:30 p.m.
