No. 13 Columbus State Paws Past GSW

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team falls to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the Peach Belt Conference after an 83-65 loss to the 13th-ranked Columbus State Lady Cougars (17-1, 11-1 PBC) Monday night in the Storm Dome.

The Lady 'Canes were basket for basket in the first quarter and even took a 7-6 lead over the Lady Cougars three minutes in. Columbus State went on an 11 point run to lead 17-7 with three minutes to go in the first. GSW went on a five point run to cut the gap to six points with 37 seconds left but the Lady Cougars ended the quarter with a free throw to lead 21-14.

Columbus State went on a nine point run after Chanice Whitton made the first basket of the second quarter and had a 14 point advantage 3:10 in. Brittany Grant cut the gap to 14 with a 3-pointer and the Lady Cougars took a 12 point margin to head into halftime up 40-28.

The Lady 'Canes out-scored Columbus State 21-16 in the third and came within three points of the Lady Cougars after a seven point run halfway through.

Grant made a jump shot followed by Kris Beckham with a 3-pointer and Whitton with a layup.

Each team made a 3-pointer at the end of the third and Columbus led 56-49 heading into the final quarter.

The Lady Cougars out-scored GSW 27-16 in the fourth. The Lady 'Canes tried to fight the 13th-ranked Cougars till the very end scoring seven points in the final minute but it wasn't enough to close the gap and lost by 18.

Grant led the Lady 'Canes with 16 points and Gabby Figgers scored 14, four baskets being 3-pointers. Holden picked up nine rebounds and Whitton had six.

The Lady Hurricanes are home on Wednesday to host Young Harris College at 5:30 p.m.
