Whitton And Holden Double-Double In Montevallo Win

AMERICUS, Ga.-The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team snapped a five game losing streak with a 74-65 win over the University of Montevallo Saturday evening in the Storm Dome on Homecoming.

GSW improved to 12-9 overall and 7-7 in the Peach Belt Conference while Montevallo moved to 4-17, 1-13 PBC.

The game was tied 4-4 two minutes into the first quarter when Chanice Whitton made two free throws. Montevallo went on a five-point run to lead 9-4 and the Lady 'Canes retaliated with a seven-point run to lead 11-9.

Whitton made a layup followed by Mallory Diamond with a layup and Kya Cochran finished it with a 3-pointer.

The game was tied three more times in the first quarter before Montevallo finished it with two free throws to lead 18-16.

The second quarter was tied three times in the first three minutes. Montevallo had a two point advantage at the 5:52 mark and Gabby Figgers sunk a 3-pointer to take a 25-24 lead. Diamond put in another 3-pointer seconds later to take a four point edge.

Montevallo took a one point lead but the Lady 'Canes went on another seven-point run. Figgers sunk a 3-pointer, Kris Beckham made two free throws and Shanya Jones made a layup to lead 35-29 with 2:45 left in the second quarter.

Montevallo made back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game and Jones sunk a layup with seconds left to lead 37-35 heading into halftime.

The Lady 'Canes started the third quarter with a ten-point run. Whitton made a layup, Beckham made two free throws, Brittany Grant made one free throw, Aleah Holden made a free throw and Whitton put in back-to-back jump shots.

Montevallo only score one basket in the third quarter to break up GSW's point binge. The Lady 'Canes ended the quarter with a nine-point run. Figgers made another 3-pointer, Adrianne Brown made a jump shot and Holden had back-to-back layups to head into the final quarter up 56-37.

Montevallo out-scored GSW 28-18 in the fourth but it wasn't enough to take the lead from the Lady 'Canes.

Whitton and Holden both recorded double doubles for GSW. Whitton scored 17 points and picked up 11 rebounds. Holden scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds.

The Lady Hurricanes are on the road Wednesday to play North Georgia at 5:30 p.m.
