PBC/SIAC Challenge Coming This Weekend

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team is hosting the seventh annual, four-team Peach Belt Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge in the Storm Dome with games on Friday and Saturday.

The action gets started at 5 p.m. on Friday with Columbus State and Fort Valley State taking the floor. GSW and Albany State follow at 7 p.m.

On Saturday evening, Columbus State will meet Albany State at 5 p.m. with the Lady Hurricanes and Fort Valley State wrapping up the PBC/SIAC Challenge at 7 p.m.

GSW has won the last four meetings with Albany State and holds a 7-2 series advantage since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 2006. However, ASU picked up a victory in 2013 when GSW last hosted this event. Fort Valley State won its most recent matchup with GSW, a 63-62 decision last December, to snap a five-game winning streak in the series for the Lady Hurricanes.

GSW comes into the weekend with a 1-0 record after knocking off 8th-ranked Valdosta State on Tuesday, 62-54. Mariya Trimble and Shanya Jones scored 12 points apiece to lead the Lady Hurricanes. Brittany Grant grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.

Albany State enters the weekend looking for its first win after dropping games to West Florida and Valdosta State by an average of 21 points to open the season. Elesha Foster leads the team in scoring with 8.5 points per game and Shantrell Holland is grabbing a team-high 6.5 rebounds per contest.

FVSU has lost its first three games of the season and is coming off a 94-37 setback at North Georgia on Tuesday. Alicia Franklin is the Wildcats top scorer, averaging 14.3 ppg and Nola Carter is averaging a double-double with 10.7 ppg and 10 rpg.

CSU (1-0) opened the season with a 70-64 victory over No. 18 West Florida on Wednesday night. Machala Raymonville led all scorers with 24 points, while Tatiana Wayne scored a career-high 17.
