Bearcats Use Big Second Half To Claw Past Lady Canes

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Lander Bearcats rode a 57 point second half en route to defeating the Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team 90-53 at the Storm Dorm Saturday.

GSW falls to 4-4 overall (1-3 PBC) while Lander improved to 9-2 on the season (4-1 PBC).  

Tyisha Moore recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 boards to lead the Lady Canes. Mariya Trimble scored a team-high 12 points in the loss.

Lander was led by Chelsea Mitchell who scored 26 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and recorded six steals. Breshay Johnson tallied 19 points and 13 boards for the Bearcats.

How It Happened: After a Mariya Trimble jump shot pulled GSW within 9-8 at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter, the Bearcats went on a 10-2 run over the final four minutes of the first to take a nine point lead. Seven Lander offensive rebounds in the first 10 minutes led to six second chance points for the Bearcats.

The Lady Canes fought back in the second quarter matching Lander point for point. GSW forced the Bearcats into 27.3 percent shooting from the floor (6-of-22), while shooting 43 percent on their own end to keep the lead at nine points at the half. Lauren Duncan scored five points in the quarter on 2-of-3 shooting from the floor to lead GSW.

GSW couldn't keep up with the Bearcats in the second half as the Lady Canes were outscored 57-29 in the final two quarters. Lander held a 52-33 advantage on the boards, including 29 on the offensive end.

Who Stood Out: Transfer guard Lauren Duncan got the start and made the most of it, recording season highs of five points, four assists and three rebounds. Mariya Trimble scored in double figures for a team-high sixth time this season with 12 points.
