Slow Start Hurts Lady Canes At Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team got off to a slow start in the first quarter and ultimately fell 67-57 at Young Harris on Saturday afternoon.

Tyisha Moore shot 3 of 6 from the field and 5 of 7 from the free throw line, scoring all 11 of her points in the second half to lead the Lady Canes. Center Patra Parris got her first start of the season and added eight points to go along with five rebounds.

GSW falls to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in Peach Belt Conference play with the loss.

Young Harris was led by Sarah Garner who grabbed 20 rebounds to go along with 12 points.

How It Happened: The Lady Canes dug themselves an early hole in the first quarter, committing five turnovers in the first five minutes of the game. After Patra Parris knocked down a free throw with 6:37 left in the first to make it a one point game, Young Harris went on a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to build a double-digit lead. The Mountain Lions would turn that into a 19-9 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

GSW turned in its best quarter after that slow start to open the game. The Lady Canes outscored YHC by four points in the second, including an 11-2 run over the first four plus minutes to cut the lead to one after Brittany Grant knocked down three straight from the free throw line. Turnovers in the final five minutes helped the Mountain Lions rebuild the lead and make it a 30-24 game at the half.

Turnovers would again hurt Georgia Southwestern in the second half, ending any chance of completing a comeback down the stretch. Brittany Grant made a layup and free throw to cut the lead to six with 3:43 left, but Young Harris made their free throws down the stretch to extend the lead back to double-digits.

The Lady Canes committed 24 turnovers, leading to 19 Young Harris points on the afternoon. GSW was only able to score eight points off 16 turnovers by the Mountain Lions.

Who Stood Out: Center Patra Parris turned in her second straight nice performance. After an 11 point, seven rebound performance against Georgia College the junior got the start Saturday and contributed underneath for the Lady Canes. Senior Brittany Grant scored eight points to go along with six rebounds off the bench.

Up Next: GSW returns home for the first of three straight games at the Storm Dome with Columbus State visiting Americus for a 5:30 p.m. tip on Wednesday.
