GSW Comes Up Short Against Lady Braves

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Tyisha Moore scored 16 points and Brittany Grant added 13, but it wasn't enough as UNC Pembroke escaped with a 73-60 win over the Georgia Southwestern State women's basketball team in front of 313 at the Storm Dome Monday.

GSW falls to 4-9 overall and 1-8 in the Peach Belt Conference with the loss. Brandi Robinson scored 14 points and Avery Locklear added 13 to lead the Lady Braves (5-8, 3-6 PBC).

How It Happened: The Lady Canes started strong again, outscoring UNCP 19-13 in the first 10 minutes thanks to 53.8 percent shooting (8 of 15) from the floor. Tamecia Blue and Gabby Figgers each scored five points in that first quarter as GSW held their biggest lead of the game at 10 with 1:23 left.

For the third straight game the second quarter belonged to the road team. After a layup from Brittany Grant gave the Lady Canes an eight-point lead with 7:36 left in the second UNCP used a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the game 28-24.

GSW fought back to regain the lead on two free throws from Mariya Trimble, but the Lady Braves scored the last seven points to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room.

Ice-cold shooting from long-range in the third spelled trouble for GSW as they went 0 of 4 from the 3-point line and just 6 of 17 from the field (35.3 percent). On the other end UNCP was firing on all cylinders, shooting over 50 percent from the field and 1 of 2 from the 3-point line. That led to a 16-point lead for the Lady Braves heading into the final frame.

A jump shot from Kya Cochran got the UNCP lead down to 11 at 71-60 with 1:59 left, but that was as close as GSW could get. Nyla Allen made a layup at the other end on the next possession and the two teams went scoreless over the final minute and a half.

The Lady Canes shot just 2 of 15 from 3-point range on the afternoon (13.3 percent) and 10 of 20 from the free throw line. UNCP held a 46-44 advantage on the boards and GSW had 18 turnovers to 17 for the Lady Canes.

Who Stood Out: Brittany Grant scored in double-figures for the first time this season with 13 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field. Mariya Trimble fell a rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Up Next: The Lady Canes return to the road with visits to Flagler (Jan. 18) for a 5:30 p.m. tip and Augusta (Jan. 20) with tip scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
