Saints Too Strong Early, Defeat Lady Canes In St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Kris Beckham scored a season-high 12 points off the bench, but a rough first quarter was too much for the Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team to overcome in an 89-77 loss at Flagler Gymnasium Thursday.

The Lady Canes fall to 10-4 overall and 1-9 in Peach Belt Conference play with the defeat. Bri Roberts and Tiffany Hodge both scored 16 points to lead the Saints.

How It Happened: The first 10 minutes of the game was a struggle for GSW as Flagler shot 54.5 percent (12 of 22) from the floor to take a 31-13 lead at the end of one. The Saints used a 14-4 run over the final five minutes of the quarter to build the big advantage.

Reversing the trend of the last two games GSW turned the tables on Flagler in the second quarter, outscoring the Saints 21-12 to make it a nine point game at the half. Adrianne Brown scored eight points in the frame on 4 of 6 shooting to help the Lady Canes bring the lead to single-digits.

In the back-and-forth game Flagler had a big quarter again in the third. The Saints shot 62.5 percent, including 3 of 6 from long-range to outscore GSW 25-16. Tabitha Odabe scored six points and grabbed six boards in the quarter for Flagler.

The Lady Canes scored 27 points in the fourth quarter but couldn't get the lead closer than 12 points. Tyisha Moore scored eight points on 4 of 7 shooting to try and bring GSW back in the final 10 minutes.

Flagler outrebounded GSW 48-30. The Lady Canes won the turnover battle 21-15.

Who Stood Out: GSW had four players score in double-figures led by Tyisha Moore with 16 and Amanda Melosky with 15. Kris Beckham fell one rebound short of her first double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. Gabby Figgers knocked down three from long-range on the way to scoring 11 points.
