Early Struggles Continue For Lady Canes In Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. -- Tamecia Blue, Kris Beckham and Mariya Trimble all scored in double-figures, but it wasn't enough for the Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team to get past USC Aiken, falling 59-54.

GSW falls to 7-14 overall and 4-13 in Peach Belt Conference play with the loss.

Kyrie' Chandler scored 18 points to lead the Pacers, who improve to 6-17 on the season and 3-14 in the Peach Belt.

How It Happened: A trend as of late, the Lady Canes fell behind early and dug themselves a hole after the first quarter by trailing 20-8. GSW made just three shots from the floor in the opening frame and shot 21.4 percent. On the other end USCA was 8-for-14 (57.1 percent).

Georgia Southwestern was able to turn it around in the second quarter behind Kris Beckham. The junior scored nine points to help the Lady Canes outscore USCA by seven in the quarter and cut the lead to five as the teams went to the locker room.

The third quarter was all Lady Canes, beginning with a Tamecia Blue 3-pointer on the first possession that led to a 13-2 GSW run over the first 7:32 and a 6-point lead. USCA got a 3-pointer from Sade Johnson with 2:02 left and neither team scored the rest of the way giving GSW a 41-38 advantage heading to the fourth.

USCA opened the fourth on a 10-2 run that would prove to be too much for the Lady Canes to overcome. Mariya Trimble made two free throws with 3:05 to go that gave GSW a 50-49 lead, but a 3-pointer from Chandler on the next possession and made free throws over the final two minutes put the game away for the Pacers.

Who Stood Out: Mariya Trimble fell just a rebound short of recording her third straight double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine boards to go along with three assists. Brittany Grant went 3-of-6 from deep to score nine points in 16 minutes on the floor. Tamecia Blue recorded six steals to go along with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
