Bearcats Throttle Lady Canes At Finis Horne Arena

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Lander jumped in front and ran away from the Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team on the way to a 94-53 victory Monday at Finis Horne Arena.

Shanya Jones scored 15 points while Mariya Trimble added 13 and five rebounds for the Lady Canes (7-15, 4-14 PBC).

Chelsea Mitchell poured in 19 points and grabbed 14 boards for the Bearcats as they improved to 19-5 overall and 14-4 in Peach Belt play.

How It Happened: Lander jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and never looked back. The Lady Canes were able to cut the Bearcat lead to six on a Shanya Jones layup with 1:52 left in the first, but that was as close as GSW would get the rest of the way as Lander led by nine after the first 10 minutes.

Tamecia Blue scored six points and Shanya Jones added five in the second quarter, but only four points combined came from the rest of the team as Lander made it a 21-point halftime advantage.

The offensive struggles continued for GSW in the third as they could only manage 10 points on 18.8 percent shooting (3-of-16). Trimble and Blue were the only Lady Canes able to score from the floor in the quarter.

Lander scored 28 points in the fourth to extend the lead and hand GSW its largest loss of the season. The Lady Canes committed 23 turnovers after giving it away 30 times the last time the two teams met in Americus on December 30. It was the sixth time this season GSW has commited 20 or more turnovers.

The Bearcats held a 52-38 advantage on the boards and outscored the Lady Canes by 20 (46-26) in the paint. Lander had 16 fastbreak points compared to zero for GSW.

Up Next: The Lady Canes return home for a matchup with Flagler at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday inside the Storm Dome.
