Saints March Out Of Storm Dome With Victory

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team fell 75-66 to Flagler College on Play4Kay night Wednesday at the Storm Dome.

Mariya Trimble and Amanda Melosky both scored 16 points to lead the Lady Canes (7-16, 4-15 PBC).

The Saints (16-7, 14-5 PBC) got 19 points from Bri Roberts to go along with 18 points and 15 rebounds from Tabitha Odabe.

How It Happened: Flagler shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the field in the first quarter on the way to scoring 27 points to build a nine-point lead after the opening frame. Mariya Trimble and Shanya Jones both poured in six points, but the Lady Canes only shot 33.3 percent (7-of-21) and got outrebounded 12-9.

GSW was able to turn it around in the second quarter and make it a five-point game at the half. Down 10 points with 7:20 to go in the quarter, the Lady Canes went on a 12-3 run to make it 36-35 after Amanda Melosky knocked down a jumper with 2:29 left. The Saints scored 10 points down the stretch to make it 46-41 as the two teams went to the locker room.

The Lady Canes struggled to knock down shots again in the third, going just 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from the field and 1-of-5 from long-range. At the other end Flagler shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) to take a 12-point lead to the final quarter. Odabe and Roberts scored six and five points, respectively for the Saints.

Mariya Trimble made a jump shot with 2:29 left in the game cutting the Flagler lead to six at 71-65, but that was as close as GSW would get. The Saints made 4-of-6 free throws in the final two minutes to keep the Lady Canes from making it a one-possession game down the stretch.

Who Stood Out: Gabby Figgers kept the Lady Canes in the game in the fourth, making three straight 3-pointers on the way to scoring nine points. Tyra Smith saw 13 minutes on the floor off the bench and scored six points to go along with five rebounds, four of them coming on the offensive end.
