VALDOSTA, Ga. -- An 18-2 run by Valdosta State in the second quarter heated things up as Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team had trouble putting out the flame. GSW dropped their final non-conference match of the season by score of 78-54 to the Blazers. 

How It Happened: In a tight first quarter, a 3-pointer by Lex Chatman pushed the Lady Canes to a 9-8 lead with 4:46 left in the quarter. That score led to a 9-4 run by GSW as they ended the first quarter up 18-12. 

GSW (3-4) started the second quarter with a layup by Tamia Sapp followed by a 3-pointer by Madison Johnson before Valdosta heated up. A layup by Valdosta's Crystal Townsend sparked an 18-2 run that GSW couldn't handle as the Blazers held the Lady Canes to seven points in the second quarter, 30-25. 

A layup by Mariya Trimble to start the third quarter cut the score down to three points, 30-27, but GSW went scoreless afterwards. The Blazers went on a 13-point scoring run until the Lady Canes called a timeout with 5:13 left in the quarter. Valdosta scored 25 points in the third quarter to push their lead to 16 points going into the final quarter up 55-39 during this afternoons midweek matchup. 

Valdosta State (6-3) led by as much as 26 points in the final quarter as they combined for 48 second half points compared to GSW's 29. 

GSW only went to the line six times this afternoon, draining five shots from the free throw line. An efficent Valdosta went 11-for-16 from the line and shot 58.3 percent from behind the arc, dropping 7-of-12. The Lady Canes finished 27.8 percent from behind the arc while shooting 22-for-59, 37.3 percent from the field compared to the Blazer's 53.6 percent from the field. 

Who Stood Out: Chatman led the way for the Lady Canes with 11 points - draining three from behind the arc. She followed with four steals and three assists. Sapp, who came off the bench, grabbed a team high four rebounds to go with her eight points as Kya Cochran led with seven points. 

Blazer's Nari Garner came off the bench draining five 3-pointers as she finished with a team high 18 points. 

Up Next: The Lady Canes will play their first of two home conference games before the team leaves for Christmas break. They will host Francis Marion Monday, Dec. 17 for a 1 p.m. tip off.
