Bearcats Overpower Lady Canes

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Lander University's Tabitha Dailey scored 33 points throughout three quarters to push her team to a 91-53 Peach Belt victory over the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Finis Horne Arena.

The Lady Canes struggled offensively throughout the whole game to the Bearcats full court press. On the other end of the court, Lander controlled everything inside, scoring 60 points in the paint this afternoon. 

How It Happened: Coming out the jump, a steal and jumper by Tamecia Blue got the Lady Canes on the board first before the Bearcats went on a 10-2 run. A layup by Madison Johnson closed the score to 10-8 with 7:10 left in the first quarter. Following a three-pointer by Lex Chatman, Lander went on another 10 point scoring run to end the first quarter up, 32-17.

In the second quarter, a three-pointer by Lele Young closed the scoring gap to 10 points, 35-25, as the Lady Canes were determined to get back the lead. With four minutes left in the half, both squads went on a scoring drought for two minutes before Mariya Trimble ended the drought with a layup, 43-30. The Bearcats went into halftime leading 49-32.

The Bearcats scored 22 points in the third quarter alone while holding the Lady Canes to 21 total second half points and were leading by as much as 40 points within the final two minutes. GSW (4-6, 1-3) struggled with shooting this afternoon, going 22-for-76, shooting 28.9 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from the arc. Lander (8-4, 5-1 PBC) finished with 51.4 percent shooting from the field and 21.1 percent from behind the arc. Lander also led at the line, draining 13-of-17 while GSW only drained 3-of-6. 

GSW had a 33-22 bench point advantage to end the night but struggled with 18 points in the paint while losing the rebound battle (52-35). The Lady Canes also had three more turnovers (19-16) than the Bearcats. 

Who Stood Out: Tyra Smith and Young led from off the bench, as Smith led with a team-high nine points and eight rebounds while Young grabbed six rebounds and scored eight points. Blue and Brianna Perry each finished with seven points. 

Lander's Dailey 33 points was matched with seven rebounds followed by Amiaya Melvins, who scored 16 points and had six rebounds.
