Lady Canes Take Overtime Thriller

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Morgan Towells finished with her first career double-double (17 points, 14 rebounds) in route to a 64-63 overtime victory over Georgia College Wednesday afternoon at the Centennial Center.

In overtime, Towells dropped a three pointer before the Bobcats could get on the board. Shortly after, both teams exchanged layups to push the score to 59-58 with three minutes left. Coming out of a timeout, Brianna Perry dropped a three and followed up with a layup to push the lead to 64-59 with one minute left in overtime.

On their following possession, the Bobcats answered but due to missed free throws by GSW, they were unable to put the score out of reach. GC answered with another score, 64-63, with 11 seconds left and fouled on the following possession. GSW failed again to make both free throws but their defense held up, winning the game in overtime. 

How It Happened: With 22 seconds left in the game, Perry dropped a three that put the game in one possession, 54-53. Following a timeout, the Bobcats turned the ball over and fouled Kris Beckham in the process. Beckham was at the line with 13 seconds left and chance to win the game but she only dropped 1-of-2 to push the game into overtime. 

In the first quarter after being tied at 8, GSW started to take control of the game with an 10-3 scoring run and finished the first quarter leading 22-18. The Bobcats started to claw back in the second quarter as they quickly tied the game at 22 with 8:12 left in the first half. After regaining the lead, Towells was able to get a quick layup in to tie the game again at 26 with five minutes left. Shortly after, the Bobcats took control, going on a 9-3 run to end the quarter with a 35-29 lead.

With 8:44 left in the third quarter, GC was able to get a 10-point lead on GSW, 39-29. GC's Cassidy Markle made a layup to make the game 44-36 before both teams went on a three minute scoring drought. A GC made free throw and a shot by Towells with 22 seconds left closed the quarter at 45-38. 

The Lady Canes surged back and took a 46-45 lead in the fourth quarter with 6:46 left in the game. Four minutes later, the game was tied at 50 points after a made three pointer by GC. The Bobcats drained a pair of three throws followed by a made shot to push their lead to 54-50 with 48 seconds left in the game. 

GSW (5-6, 2-3 PBC) went 24-for-63 (38.1 percent) from the field but only dropped 12 of their 24 free throw shots. The Bobcats went 23-for-65 (35.4 percent) and dropped 13-of-21 from the line this afternoon. GSW took the rebound advantage (46-45) but they had more turnovers (15-13) than their conference foe. 

GSW bench scored 62 points this afternoon. 

Who Stood Out: Mariya Trimble and Perry both came off the bench finishing with double-digit points also, going 15 and 12, respectively. Trimble also had two steals and one rebound as Perry had four rebounds and one steal. Beckham finished off the bench with nine points. 

Former GSW player Jasmine McSwain led the Bobcats (5-7, 3-3 PBC) with 20 points and eight rebounds followed by Sydney Cleveland, who grabbed 10 rebounds and put up 15 points.
