Nighthawks Blast Through Lady Canes

DAHLONEGA, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team fell to No. 22 North Georgia by score of 89-75 inside the UNG Convocation Center Saturday afternoon. 

GSW shot a season-high 47 percent from behind the arc but North Georgia dominated the paint, outscoring GSW 56-38 with points in the paint. 

How It Happened: North Georgia started quick, they went on a 14-6 run to open up the game and never looked back. A layup by Mariya Trimble closed the scoring gap to four points, 14-10, with 5:26 left in the first quarter but that didn't hold long. UNG erupted with a 13-7 run to end the first quarter up 27-17. 

The Nighthawks opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run to go up 37-19 before a GSW timeout with 7:15 remaining in the half. With four minutes left in the quarter, both teams went on a scoring drought. Lex Chatman ended the drought with a three-pointer one minute left in the half but UNG quickly answered back with a three of their own to go into halftime up 46-30. 

UNG kept their homecoming momentum strong coming out the second half as GSW couldn't figure out how to slow them down. They erupted with a 20-point lead midway through the third quarter, 59-39, that forced GSW to call a timeout. The third quarter ended with a layup by Kya Cochran as UNG led 67-49. 

GSW fell behind by 23 points with 4:15 left in the game, 82-59, as the Lady Canes lost for the fifth consecutive time. 

Both squads equaled out with 42 rebounds and 12 turnovers. UNG shared the ball this afternoon with 26 assists compared to GSW's 14.

Who Stood Out: Morgan Towells led the offense with 16 points and two assists followed by Jamesha Samuel, who drained 3-of-4 from behind the arc for 11 points. Madison Johnson had a team-high nine rebounds.

Julianne Sutton led with 25 points and 16 rebounds to give UNG their tenth PBC win of the year.
