No Love For The Lady Canes

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team made a season-high 12 three-pointers tonight but that didn't phase Columbus State University, who came into the Storm Dome itching for revenge. After taking the opening lead, CSU bounced back and clawed their way to a 84-75 Peach Belt win Wednesday night.

Morgan Towells and Brianna Perry accounted for eight of the 12 three's made tonight as both Lady Canes finished shooting 50 percent from behind the arc.

GSW had trouble with getting calls tonight and only went to the foul line 10 times compared to the Cougars, who went to the line 24 times.

How It Happened: Perry opened the game with back-to-back three's followed by a layup as the Lady Canes led 8-4. Turnovers by GSW gave the ball back to CSU, who tied the game at eight with 4:35 remaining. GSW closed the quarter with a 14-8 lead.

CSU came out in the second quarter on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 16 before taking the lead on their following possession. Lex Chatman drained two from behind the arc for GSW as both teams tied and exchanged leads. Up 28-25, the Cougars went on a 15-2 run right into halftime to outscore the Lady Canes 40-30 to end the first half.

The Lady Canes regrouped in the locker room and came out in the third quarter with scoring on their mind. Their defense held strong as the Lady Canes scored nine points to put themselves back in the game. With 6:15 remaining in the third quarter, they were down 46-41. A three by Jamesha Samuel cut the score down to one possession, 50-47, but CSU answered with a three of their own to extend the lead. Samuel drained another three at the buzzer to cut CSU's lead back down to three points.

The Cougars opened the final ten minutes with a 17-5 run over the Lady Canes, who couldn't get anything to fall. They took a 15-point lead, 75-60, with 5:24 left in the game. A three by Towells cut the scoring gap down to single digits, 78-70, but that didn't last long. CSU sealed the deal with late free throws for the win.

Both teams had a total of 19 turnovers in tonight's contest but CSU held the advantage as 14 of those were steals.

Who Stood Out: Perry led with 16 points and three rebounds followed by Towells and Samuel, who ended with 14 points each. Chatman added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Canes.

CSU was lead by Tatiana Wayne who finished with a team-high 19 points. Tatum Jarvis ended with a double-double, scoring 15 points while snatching down 11 boards.

Up Next: The Lady Canes will stay at home to face USC Aiken on Saturday, Feb. 16 for a 1:30 p.m. tip off time.
