AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team turned the ball over 10 times in the opening quarter which led to Lander University getting the upper half during tonight's game in the Storm Dome. The Bearcats forced a total of 27 turnovers en route to an 80-52 Peach Belt Conference win Monday night. 

How It Happened: GSW was five turnovers in when Tyra Smith scored the first points of the game, tieing the game at 2 with 7:17 remaining. Lander answered with a three-pointer as they went on a 13-7 run to close the first quarter up 18-9. 

Lander was up by 20 points before GSW could reach double-digit figures. A layup by Mariya Trimble put 10 on the score board for the Lady Canes midway through the second half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Lele Young and Madison Johnson cut the scoring gap to 14 points but defensively, they couldn't hold the Bearcats. Lander beat the shot clock from deep to end the first half leading 43-21. 

The Bearcats took their largest lead of the night, 61-26, with 5:54 left in the third quarter. Behind a pair of Lex Chatman threes, GSW closed the third quarter with a 14-3 run to come back within 24 points of the Bearcats. The first place Bearcats became out of reach during the fourth quarter as GSW extended their losing streak.

Both teams finished 5-of-19 from behind the arc, shooting 26.3 percent. GSW took a 43-36 rebound advantage but Lander (19-6, 16-3 PBC) capitalized with scoring 44 points inside the paint. 

Who Stood Out: Trimble led the Lady Canes (8-16, 5-13 PBC) with a team-high 11 bench points and two steals. Chatman finished with eight points and nine boards and Smith brought down 10 rebounds along with four points and four assists. 

Lander's Tabitha Dailey led the way for the Bearcats with 22 points, three steals and four rebounds. 

Up Next: The Lady Canes hit the road and will travel to St. Augustine, Fla., to play Flagler College on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
