Saints Stay Consistent For Win

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Georgia Soutwestern women's basketball team closed the scoring gap to seven points midway through the fourth quarter but Flagler College held on and extended the lead to take the 68-59 victory Wednesday night inside Flagler Gymnasium. 

How It Happened: A three by Lex Chatman tied the game at 6 with 6:38 left in the first quarter and that was the last time the Lady Canes scored in the quarter. The Saints defense pressed GSW up and down the court as they rolled out a 7-0 run to go into the second quarter up, 13-6. 

Two minutes into the second quarter, Flagler was steadily pushing the lead as they were up by 12 points. Lele Young made back-to-back three's followed by Kris Beckham free throw's to help catch up to the Saints, who was leading 23-19. Flagler held on for the 27-22 halftime lead. 

The Saints erupted with a 13-point lead, 40-27, midway through the third quarter as things started to get out of hand for the Lady Canes. Not only were they struggling to make shots, they were struggling to pull down rebounds also as Flagler took a 51-38 rebound advantage over GSW. 

The Lady Canes rallied in the fourth quarter, cutting the score down to 49-42 with 6:26 remaining the game but that didn't last long. Flagler pushed for a double-digit lead and held on to it. A three by Morgan Towells followed by a Chatman layup cut the lead back down to single digits but the Saints didn't let the score get any closer. 

Flager shot 70 percent from the line, draining 21-of-30 as GSW only shot 56.3 percent from the line, draining 9-of-16. GSW finished with 32 bench points and 22 points in the paint with 17 assists on the night. 

Who Stood Out: Chatman led with 10 points and one steal followed by Madison Johnson and Young, who both had eight points. Young grabbed a team-high eight rebounds with two steals and one block while Johnson had six rebounds.  

Flagler had two players to end with double-doubles tonight as Tabitha Odabe had 24 points and 18 rebounds. Chris Wilson finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
