GSW riding "Hy"att after 3-0 win

AMERICUS - Freshman Zada Hyatt scored a pair of goals and junior Ally Canganelli added another as the Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 victory over LaGrange College on Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

GSW wasted no time jumping ahead of the Panthers. The opening score came in the 7th minute when Canganelli intercepted a pass, drove into the box and blasted a shot left past LaGrange goalkeeper Kristin Bird. The goal, 419 seconds into the contest, was the second-fastest score in school history. Teammate Brittney Hill scored 344 seconds into a match against Columbia (S.C.) College on Oct. 12, 2009.

After the quick score on Sunday, it was the tandem of Hyatt and Carolann Simpson the rest of the way. Simpson picked up an assist on both Hyatt goals, the first coming in the 25th minute when she led Hyatt to a left-foot shot near post for her third score of the season.

Staying in check with quick starts, the third - and final - score of the match came 31 seconds into the start of the second half when Simpson drove to the right side of the box and found Hyatt in the middle who knocked another left-footed shot, this time to the far post. Now at four goals for the year, Hyatt has already matched last year's team high for the season.

Starting GSW goalkeeper Amber Bahri and freshman Jordyn Birchett played 45 minutes apiece and teamed for the Lady 'Canes first shutout of the season. Southwestern outshot the Panthers 16-3 and the defense held LaGrange (1-4) without a shot attempt in the second half.

The Lady Hurricanes (2-4) look to make it two in a row on Wednesday when Brewton-Parker comes to town for a 5 p.m. contest.
