Senior Day heartbreak

Senior Day heartbreak

AMERICUS - Christine Prince of the University of Montevallo found an opportune moment to shut the door on Georgia Southwestern's season - and avoid a draw with the Lady Hurricanes - with a goal in the 109th minute to give the Falcons a 2-1 double-overtime victory on Saturday afteroon at Hurricane Field.

It was GSW taking the early lead on Senior Day and fittingly, senior Brittney Hill gave the Lady Hurricanes a 1-0 advantage when she punched a cross from Carolann Simpson to the far post from six yards out. The goal was Hill's 17th career score and ties her with Elizabeth Keller as the all-time leader in program history.

Montevallo was quick to respond. Camilla Alderin bent in a 25-yarder from the middle of the field in the 18th minute to even the score at 1-1.

From there it was a defensive struggle. Montevallo outshot GSW 9-6 through the rest of regulation, but only led 4-3 in shots on goal during that stretch.

The first overtime held more of the same defensive stoutness. Only two shots shots were taken, both by Montevallo.

Hill had the best look for GSW to end it in the second overtime, but her rebound off a cross drilled the post in the 105th minute.

With less than two minutes left in the match, it looked like a draw was inevitable, but Prince took a pass from teammate Olivia McKenzie inside the box, advanced to six yards out and punched a shot inside the far post with 1:15 left on the clock to give UM the win.

Montevallo (6-11-1, 3-6-1 PBC) finished with an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Hill and Simpson took two shots apiece for GSW (3-15, 0-10 PBC).

Goalkeeper Amber Bahri saved six shots for the Lady 'Canes. Alyssa Maxwell saved two in the first half for Montevallo before making way for Kaitlin Thomas, who stopped one shot in her 64 minutes between the pipes.

GSW recognized its four seniors at halftime. Hill, Nicole Hudson, Katie Mueller and Hanah Swinson wrapped up their collegiate careers on Saturday.
