AMERICUS - A pair of first half goals from Converse College midfielder Natalie Johnson would prove to be the difference as the Valkyries handed Georgia Southwestern a 3-1 defeat on Tuesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.

Johnson opened the scoring when she curled a free kick around the GSW wall in the 16th minute from 25 yards. Converse went up 2-0 when Johnson punched in her second score at the 39:41 mark.

The Valkyries extended their lead to 3-0 in the second half when Darby Boyd scored off an assist from Johnson in the 58th minute.

Mallory Hawkes put the Lady Hurricanes on the board when she punched in a loose ball from the middle of the penalty box at 83:58 for her first goal of the season.

Converse (5-2) finished with a 13-7 shots on goal advantage and 11-5 margin in corner kicks.

Elyse Gowan saved two in goal for GSW in the first half before making way for Kendal Baskin who stopped eight over the final 45 minutes. Converse rotated four keepers with starter Gabie Chamberland leading way with four saves in 54 minutes.

Southwestern (0-4) returns to the pitch on Thursday to host Coker College at 4 p.m.
