Crawford Scores in Lady Canes Season-Opening Loss to Emmanuel

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 2-1 defeat against Emmanuel College Wednesday night in front of 136 at Hurricane Field.

The Lady Canes (0-1-0) gave up two first half goals to the Lions before getting on the board in the 67th minute and having several chances at an equalizer, but were unable to convert opportunities in front of the goal.

Forward Shatyriah Crawford put away the Lady Canes first goal of the season when teammate Anna Higginbotham left a good ball in the box and Crawford was able to beat Emmanuel keeper Hannah Welch.

Georgia Southwestern had opportunities to find the tying score, including two in the final two minutes from Crawford and Ella Hawkins. The Lions were able to save a shot by Crawford and block Hawkins' effort at the equalizer.

Emmanuel (2-0-0) scored their first goal in the 28th minute on a shot from Lindsay Lee, and recorded their second in the 37th minute when Katie Estrada found the back of the net.

Georgia Southwestern outshot Emmanuel by a 15-11 mark and took 10 corners to Emmanuel's one.

Hawkins and Crawford led GSW with five shots each, while seniors Haley West and Jessica Bingham each took two shots for the Lady Canes.
