Lakers Stop Lady Canes in PBC Opener

MORROW, Ga. -- Georgia Southwestern women's soccer player Ella Hawkins scored the first goal of their conference opener tonight, but her lone goal wasn't enough to stop Clayton State from taking the game away, winning by score of 4-1.

Playing from the far right side of the field, Emily Collum assisted the ball to Hawkins who put a soft touch on the ball that glided over the goalkeepers head into the top left corner for a Lady Canes goal in the 12th minute. GSW (2-4, 0-1) only took three more shots after that.

Clayton State (3-0-2, 1-0) wasn't down for long, they got on the board in the 21st minute when Jane McKevitt served a high ball too hot for Victoria Moore's hands, as the ball snuck in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. Soon after, the Lakers got on board in the 41st minute when Ann-Catherin Zabel sent a hard shot from the right into the net, going up 2-1 before halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Canes held the score being down by one until late in the half when the Lakers got on the board again. Manoly Baquerizo scored in the 77th minute to push the Lakers up 3-1. Seven minutes later, Clayton's Marie Devillers took a free shot from the top of the box that landed in, securing their 4-1 win on the night.

The Lady Canes were held to only four shots throughout the match, compared the Lakers 27 shots (17 on goal). Clayton State also took the advantage in corner kicks (8-2).

Up Next: The Lady Canes continue their road conference schedule to Milledgeville, Ga., where they will play Georgia College on Sat., Sept. 22 for a 5 p.m. start.
