Lady Canes Lose in Double Overtime Thriller

AMERICUS, Ga. -- In double overtime, the Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team gave up a late, game-winning goal to the visiting Patriots as they took the hard fought, 2-1 victory on Hurricane Field.

In the 70th minute, GSW's Eduarda Giusti took a corner kick and placed it perfectly in the air as Brenna Mendonca jumped and headed it in for a Lady Canes (2-7, 0-4) goal.

Francis Marion (3-5, 1-3) retaliated back in the 87th minute, as Dayle McEwen took a penalty shot and kicked the ball into the upper right corner for the goal, getting the Patriots on the board for the tie.

In the second overtime, FMU got a corner kick that placed the ball in front of their goal. In the heat of the moment, both teams were scrambling. GSW players were trying to kick the ball out as FMU players were dying to end the game, and that they did. FMU's Christina Rice received an assist from Kiley Barr to score the game winning goal.

Throughout 107 minutes of play, FMU led in both shots (25-17) and shots on goal (18-12) over GSW. Both squads had a total of five corner kicks each as GSW led in fouls (18-11).

Today's game was originally scheduled for Saturday (9/29), but due to lightening delays and heavy rain, both teams chose to restart the game and play today. At halftime, the Patriots were leading 3-1 before the game was delayed for the second time, then later called off.
