Hawkins Two Goals Lead Lady Canes to Victory

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Senior Ella Hawkins two first half goals led the Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Albany State, getting their first home victory of the season under the lights on Hurricane Field. 

Alison Rugel got the Lady Canes (3-13-0) on the board first with a shot from 18 yards out that went right over the goalkeeper hands for a 1-0 score in the 10th minute. Alisa Barr was credited with the assist. In the 21st minute, Hawkins took a penalty kick that she slid into the lower right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Three minutes later Hawkins struck again, assisted by Michelle Gustavsen, for a goal that went into the right corner to push the Lady Canes up 3-0. Brenna Mendonca and Rugel both took three shots tonight as two of them were on goal. Hawkins currently leads the Lady Canes with six goals this year.   

In the 61st minute, Albany State's (1-10-1) LaFaren Donaldson passed the ball to Haley Kincheloe who scored from a long shot into the far right post to put the Golden Rams on the board. Albany was led by Sydney Bishop, who had two shots on goal and four total shots. 

Both squads took a total of 13 shots but the Lady Canes took a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Golden Rams took more corner kicks (5-2) during tonight match while each team had six saves each. 

Up Next: The Lady Canes cap off their season and will host Lander University this Saturday for senior night to celebrate four seniors on the team. The match will start at 5 p.m.
